What Material Are Lash Extensions Made Of?

The most common material is PBT, short for polybutylene terephthalate.

PBT is a synthetic polyester. It can be made into very fine lash fibers with different:

PBT is commonly used for:

• Classic lashes
• Volume lashes
• Easy fan lashes
• Premade fans
• Flat lashes
• Cluster lashes

The same material can still create very different products.

For example, a 0.05 mm matte volume lash feels very different from a 0.15 mm glossy classic lash. Both may be made from PBT, but they are designed for different techniques.

Are PBT Lashes Plastic?

Yes. PBT is a type of plastic.

However, “plastic lashes” is a broad phrase. PBT is the name of a specific synthetic material.

All PBT lashes are plastic-based, but not all plastic lashes are necessarily made from PBT.

The word plastic also does not tell you whether a lash is good or bad.

Lower-quality synthetic lashes may look shiny, stiff or uneven. Well-made PBT lashes can be:

• Soft
• Lightweight
• Flexible
• Deep black
• Matte
• Evenly curled

The quality depends on how the fiber is made.

Are Lash Extensions Made from Real Mink or Silk?

Real mink and natural silk lashes do exist.

However, they are not the main materials used in most professional lash collections today.

Real Mink Lashes

Real mink lashes are made from animal fur.

Because mink hair is natural, each fiber may be slightly different. The thickness, color and natural curve may not be completely uniform.

Real mink also requires more careful:

• Sourcing
• Cleaning
• Drying
• Hygiene control
• Quality inspection

This does not mean properly processed mink hair is always unhygienic. It simply means that animal-derived fibers are more difficult to control consistently.

Real mink products also raise animal-welfare concerns. For these reasons, they are now a smaller part of the market.

Faux Mink Lashes

Faux mink lashes do not contain real mink fur.

They are usually made from PBT or another synthetic fiber.

These are general descriptions. Different suppliers may use the words mink and silk differently.

Always check the actual diameter, curl, taper and finish instead of relying only on the product name.

Why Is PBT Commonly Used?

PBT has become common because it gives manufacturers more control.

Stable Curls

PBT fibers can be shaped into different curls during production.

This helps the lashes keep a more consistent curl across the tray.

Even Diameters

PBT can be produced in controlled thicknesses, such as:

• 0.03 mm
• 0.05 mm
• 0.07 mm
• 0.10 mm
• 0.15 mm

This is especially important for volume fans, where several fibers are used together.

Easier Hygiene Control

Synthetic PBT is easier to process in a consistent way.

Factories can standardize how the fibers are:

• Cleaned
• Dried
• Heat-set
• Inspected
• Packaged

Natural animal hair can vary in surface condition and may require more complicated cleaning and hygiene control.

PBT is not naturally antibacterial. A finished lash tray can still become contaminated if it is produced, stored or handled incorrectly.

PBT is easier to process and control consistently during production.

No Animal Fur

PBT does not contain animal hair.

This makes it a practical choice for brands and customers who want animal-free lash products.

Affordable Production

PBT can be manufactured at scale.

This helps keep lash products affordable while still offering many curls, lengths, colors and diameters.

How Are Lash Extensions Made?

The exact process varies between factories, but most PBT lash extensions follow several basic steps.

1. Preparing the PBT Material

PBT usually begins as small resin pellets.

Black pigment or another color is added to the material.

The color needs to be mixed evenly. Poor pigment control can make lashes look gray, blue or uneven.

2. Creating Fine Fibers

The PBT is heated and formed into thin filaments.

These filaments are stretched until they reach the required diameter.

A tray labeled 0.07 mm should have a reasonably consistent thickness across every row.

3. Adding the Curl and Taper

The fibers are shaped into the required curl.

The tips are also tapered so that they become thinner toward the end.

A longer taper creates a softer look. A shorter taper creates a darker and fuller lash body.

4. Cutting the Lengths

The fibers are cut into different lash lengths.

Common trays may include lengths from short inner-corner lashes to longer styling lashes.

5. Placing the Lashes on the Tray

The finished fibers are arranged on lash strips.

The tray may then be checked for:

• Curl consistency
• Length accuracy
• Even color
• Taper quality
• Strip adhesion
• Easy removal
• Clean packaging

The strip is also part of the product quality.

Even a good fiber can be difficult to use when the strip is too sticky or uneven.

How to Check Lash Extension Quality

1. Curl Check

Remove several fibers from different rows.

Place them side by side and compare the curves.

The curls should look similar. One lash should not be much straighter or tighter than the others.

You can also gently bend one fiber with tweezers.

It should return close to its original shape without forming a sharp kink.

2. Taper and Base Check

Look closely at the lash tip.

The taper should be smooth. The tip should not look blunt, rough or uneven.

Also check the base.

Watch for:

• Bent roots
• Excess residue
• Fibers stuck together
• Uneven bases
• Difficult strip removal

For premade fans, compare the fan width and base shape across several rows.

3. Color and Finish Check

Look at the lashes under bright salon lighting or natural light.

The color should remain consistent across the tray.

A black tray should not contain obvious gray or blue sections unless that color is intentional.

Also check the finish.

A matte lash should look evenly matte. A glossy lash should have a smooth and controlled shine.

Good lash quality is mainly about consistency.

Matte vs. Glossy PBT Lashes

Matte and glossy lashes may both be made from PBT.

The difference is how the surface reflects light.

Choose Matte PBT When:

• The client wants a natural look.
• You are creating a soft volume set.
• You want less visible shine.
• The lashes need to blend with natural hairs.
• You are creating a fluffy or wispy style.

Choose Glossy PBT When:

• The client wants a darker lash line.
• You are creating a bold classic set.
• You want a mascara-like result.
• You are designing a wet-look set.
• Strong definition is the main goal.

Glossy does not automatically mean lower quality.

The right finish depends on the style you want to create.

What Are Cluster Lashes Made Of?

Many cluster lashes use PBT or another synthetic fiber.

However, a cluster lash contains more than the visible lash hairs.

It may include:

The fibers and the base may use different materials.
